J.C. Penney Afterschool Fund Sponsors Power Hour in Boys & Girls Club of Hobbs Hobbs, N.M. August 16, 2005- The JCPenney Afterschool Fund is awarding Boys & Girls Club of Hobbs a $5,000 grant to support Power Hour, an innovative afterschool tutoring program designed to teach vital homework skills to local youth. The Boys & Girls Club of Hobbs launched Power Hour several years ago at the Main Club and at their school based sites at Stone & Taylor Elementary Schools.Power Hour is an interactive homework assistance program offered during afterschool hours for children ages 6-12. The program helps young people appreciate homework as a time to work independently and feel good about their accomplishments. Students can also receive tutoring whenever possible. Studies have shown that quality afterschool programs result in lasting, life-changing lessons to include improved social skills and increased academic performance and attitude towards learning. Boys & Girls Club of Hobbs will receive an age-appropriate resource guide to help create an environment where members can complete their homework, including: · Case studies of successful homework assistance programs · Checklist for developing a winning homework strategy · A full-day Power Hour training session for staff Power Hour includes: · “Homework Helpers”- Adults and older students who supervise Club members’ homework completion · “The Power Loop”- Tips for establishing essential feedback from teachers and parents · “Power Points”- Rewards presented to Club members for successful homework completion. “Power Status” is illustrated with posters charting the progress of members In the continuing effort to ensure every child has access to an afterschool program, the JCPenney Afterschool Fund is giving $875,000 nationally in support of Power Hour. This is part of a $2.2 million total contribution to Boys & Girls Clubs of America this year. “A world of opportunity awaits every child, and Boys & Girls Clubs teach kids to realize those dreams and obtain the skills needed to succeed in life,” said Ed Solczak, executive vice president of the JCPenney Afterschool Fund. “We are proud to be affiliated with an organization that is improving so many lives in such a positive and lasting way.” The JCPenney Afterschool Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports programs designed to keep kids safely and constructively engaged during out-of-school time. The Fund’s contributions allow for the creation and continuance of afterschool programs aimed at the academic, physical, and social development of children throughout the U.S. The JCPenney Afterschool Fund also works to raise awareness of the benefits of afterschool programming, and is committed to ensuring that every child has access to the world of opportunities that awaits them after school. Girls Club of Hobbs has been providing quality youth programs to
neighborhoods that have a greater need for community involvement.
The Main Club, Stone and Taylor Elementary locations in Hobbs
